On Wednesday, 18 September 2024, at 6.30 pm in the CAC Reading Room (Aušros Vartų st. 5 / Pasažo gt., Vilnius), Anne König and Christoph Gnädig from Spector Books will present the eight titles by Jonas Mekas and talk about their publishing practice.
Jonas Mekas (1922–2019) published eight books with Spector Books, a publishing house based in Leipzig, Germany. Five titles were released during his lifetime. Brooklyn-based filmmaker and poet Mekas worked closely with publisher and editor Anne König and graphic designers Fabian Bremer and Pascal Storz who shaped the visual appearance of almost all of his eight titles.
I Seem to Live. The New York Diaries, 1950–2011, is considered Jonas Mekas’ magnum opus, and appeared in two volumes posthumously. The New York Diaries stands on an equal footing with his cinematic oeuvre, which he initially developed together with his brother Adolfas after their arrival in New York. I Seem to Live reads as a moving and subjectively condensed chronology of the postwar New York underground scene, which Jonas Mekas founded and defended through his writings.
