In the exhibition “Ground Control”, which was held at the Contemporary Art Centre in 1997, Lithuanian and British artists raised the following questions: “When electronic devices interact, are people interacting? […] What are the boundaries between visitor and alien, participant and transgressor? How does the documentation of reality connect to the pleasure of voyeurism? […] What is the effect of the pronounced visibility of electronic equipment, and what is changed when documenting technologies remain hidden?” One of the works in the exhibition PANORAMA 14: selected works from Le Fresnoy annual exhibition by young artist Veronique Beland is entitled Ground Control to Major Tom. Are the similarities in title accidental, or do they perhaps indicate that this exhibition will also raise similar questions? In the selected video pieces, photographs, animation works and installations of sound and light, young French artists and their teachers present research into how technologies mediate our perception of reality merging fact and fiction, science and mysticism, perceptible and imperceptible reality. The exhibition is accompanied by a special film programme.
