The exhibition ‘Lithuanian Art 97 / Galleries Present’ contained works by more than one hundred Lithuanian artists presented by twelve of the most active Lithuanian art galleries. For the first time in the history of Lithuania’s art exhibitions, artists were represented by galleries in one venue. It was an attempt to look at art not only from an aesthetic perspective, but also from an institutional and sociological aspect.
This exhibition developed the principles of holding annual exhibitions of the country’s artists and gallery fairs. The exhibition aimed to look at the panorama of contemporary Lithuanian art through the prism of institutional activity, forming the institutional identity and self-consciousness of Lithuanian galleries and strengthening the links among Lithuanian galleries, the society, art-supporting institutions and collectors.
