Open Call for drummers to participate in Toine Horvers’ performance Rolling 1

The Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) announces an open call for drummers and percussionists to participate in Toine Horvers’ performance Rolling 1, which will take place during the opening weekend of the 15th Baltic Triennial ‘Same Day’ on 7 September.

Toine Horvers’ Rolling 1 was first performed in Amsterdam in 1986 and will be repeated at the 15th Baltic Triennial ‘Same Day’ in Vilnius, in the Great Hall of the CAC. During this piece, the performers experience how time creates a strong connection between drummers who do not even know each other.

We are looking for up to 19 drummers or percussionists who would like to experience an extraordinary synergy of time and energy. Selected performers will be divided into two teams and, together with the artist Toine Horvers, will create a continuous drum roll performance lasting from dawn to dusk. The volume of the drumming will vary with the dynamics of daylight, which will be measured by special light sensors and displayed on screens.

Information for applicants:

  • A rehearsal with the selected participants is scheduled for 5 September.
  • The public performance will start on Saturday, 7 September, at around 5:30 am and end around 9pm.
  • The performance will involve smooth and even drum rolling without a specific rhythm or improvisation.
  • In addition to an interesting experience, the piece offers an opportunity to improve your drum roll technique.
  • There is no dress code: come as you are and in whatever you feel most comfortable.
  • If possible, please bring your own side drum on a stand.
  • Participation fee 200 eur (before taxes).

Interested drummers and percussionists are invited to send a brief description of themselves, including their academic background, concert experience, and general drumming experience, by 25 August (inclusive). Please email your application with the subject line ‘Regarding Participation in Toine Horvers’ Performance Rolling 1’ to [email protected]. Use the same contact for any additional information.
