On Thursday, June 18, at 6:00 PM, a creative workshop with softchaos will take place at the Composers’ House (A. Mickevičiaus St. 29, Vilnius). The workshop will complement the prologue to the 16th Baltic Triennial, “Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart,” which will take place the following day. The workshop with softchaos will also serve as a preview of the educational program being prepared for next year’s triennial.
To trace the history of cities like the Bronx, Kingston, Detroit, artists such as K-Hand, Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, and collectives like Underground Resistance and Drexciya is to trace the culture of global dancefloors today.
While it has developed industry mechanics over time, dj culture also holds a multitude of counter histories to dominant narratives with their own capacity for world-building.
The workshop will discuss the social, aesthetic, and technological relationships between dj’ing and what Arthur Jafa refers to as a desire to create “a cinema capable of matching the power, beauty, and alienation of Black music.”
Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the legacy, the history of the practice and the deeper threads of art as a protest. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn the basics of dj’ing. This workshop is an introduction to the idea of music as much of a practice as it is sound.
Musicians, writers, artists, and other curious spectators are all invited to attend.
If you are interested in the dj/mixing section of the workshop, please bring:
1 usb with storage size larger than 128gb with 10 music tracks minimum and any additional chosen samples of poetry reading, or noise in mp3 format. This could be electronic music, music with lyrics, anything. The more familiar you are with the songs or sounds, the better. Come with ideas in mind of why this music is important to you or why you enjoy it. A notepad and pen, and laptop if you can and anything else you need to feel comfortable for a 3hr workshop.
The event will be held in English and is free of charge; however, the number of participants is limited, with space for up to 10 people. Those wishing to attend are invited to fill out the registration form: click here.
SOFTCHAOS is a intedisciplinary visual artist, experimental writer and musician interested in poetics, performance studies and critical theory. Their work often generates complex layers of meaning through the juxtaposition of basic elements such as language/text and sound/voice intutively, often recontextualizing appropriated materials. Seemingly straightforward, their work is often disjunctive in an attempt to elicit mulitplicity in translation and transmission. They are based in Berlin.
Selected writing and recent performances at exhibitions, groups shows and collaborative projects been presented recently at Kunst Werke of Contemporary Art (2025), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2024) and Institute of Contemporary Arts London (2026) and CTM (2025). As a dj, their performances include Sónar, Primavera Sound, Les Ardentes, Corsica Studios, Fabric London, Ancienne Belgique, and Amsterdam Dance Event, among others.
They have a MPhil from the University of Cambridge and a MSc from the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.
